75th Federal Duck Stamp Contest & “Ding” Darling Days

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Federal Duck Stamp, the contest to select the 2008-2009 stamp image will take place on Sanibel Island, where the father of the Duck Stamp, Jay “Ding” Darling, helped establish a refuge. The judging will be held in conjunction with the 18th annual “Ding” Darling Days at J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The public is invited to view the exhibit of hundreds of Duck Stamp entries on display at BIG ARTS the week of the contest and will be able to sit in on the judging and special presentations Oct. 12 and 13. “Ding” Darling Days Family Fun Day will follow on Oct. 14 with all-free refuge tram tours, live animal presentations, hot dogs, and more. Birding and kayaking tours, environmental speakers, a nature photography contest, Junior Duck Stamp Awards, and showings of a historical film about Darling will fill the week with environmental activities for all ages.

Ivory-billed  woodpecker spotter Bobby Harrison and children's environmental author Lynne  Cherry headline this year's eco-festival. The refuge will host a week of youth fishing, nature photography workshops, birding tours, wildlife and environmental speakers, and other special events. Festivities culminate on Saturday, Oct. 14, with Family Fun Day featuring free hot dogs, a butterfly house, wildlife presentations, kids activities, the current Federal Duck Stamp  artist, and free narrated tram tours through the refuge.

Join hundreds of volunteers at the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in Boynton Beach for a fun-filled morning of harvesting cypress seeds. The seeds will be germinated and planted at a later date to help restore the Florida Everglades. Amateur student photographers will be on hand to document the event.
