Friends of Seal Beach NWR

The Friends of Seal Beach NWR's Pelican Van brought high visibility to the Refuge System Centennial and continues to reach out to educate surrounding communities in California. The Friends painted a passenger van with wildlife scenes, attached large plastic pelicans to the roof, produced an informative video and educational package of materials, and took the costumed Blue Goose along on a Centennial Roadshow that covered over 3200 miles between March 22 and April 6 and reached an estimated 5000 people. After completing this journey, the Friends set up a website to allow teachers throughout the Los Angeles/Orange County area to sign up for the Pelican Van to visit their school. The Friends also provide public tours of Seal Beach NWR and a wide range of essential operational support, from biological surveys to building maintenance.
