Friends of the Mid-Columbia River Wildlife Refuges The Friends of Mid-Columbia River Wildlife Refuges work closely with the staff of the Mid-Columbia Refuge Complex. The group maintains a vigorous environmental education through their work at the McNary Environmental Center, including a range of outdoor classroom activities for local students and the creation of a shrub-steppe demonstration site. Their Second Saturday public education programs, covering such topics as bats, creepy crawlers, wildflowers and responsible water resource management, draw families and scouting groups to the refuge. Friends also visit local community groups to give educational presentations. Their promotion of the special NWRS centennial commemorative Pendleton wool blankets has enjoyed widespread success as a means of raising funds and celebrating the centennial. |
