John Kelly

John Kelly's volunteer service at Balcones Canyonlands began even before the Refuge was officially established to protect habitat for the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler, which nests only in central Texas. He helped set up the Refuge's Breeding Bird Survey and has been conducting the survey ever since. He began cataloging the butterflies of Balcones in the early 1990s. Balcones now participates in Monarch Watch and tags monarchs each fall. John also helps organize the Texas Songbird Festival, a joint project for Balcones and the Lago Vista Chamber Commerce. Throughout all these activities, John has actively advocated for the refuge and worked to increase public awareness of the wildlife and habitat it protects.
