Bulls Island Shorebird Team

The Bulls Island Shorebird Team, led by Doreen and Jim Cubie and Perry Nugent, have provided critically needed shorebird survey data for Cape Romain NWR in South Carolina. Every two weeks since January 2002, the team of volunteers has collected data on shorebird counts, water levels, weather, tides, and survey routes. These Refuge surveys have documented baseline populations and helped document effects of wetland management techniques. The team has resighted more than 50 banded shorebirds, including a red knot that was banded in Brazil. Doreen has entered the surveys on computer spread sheets to facilitate analysis. Bulls Island provides internationally important migratory habitat and regularly conducted surveys are invaluable in accessing concerns raised by increasing public use pressures.
