Bonnie Strawser

Bonnie Strawser, interpretive specialist at Pea Island/Alligator RiverNWRs, has instituted several innovative conservation programs that have grown and flourished during the course of her career. She organized the refuge's intern program, then expanded it to include both college graduates and college students. She instituted the annual "Wings over Water" event, a week-long series of educational conservation activities focused on the Outer Banks barrier island and wetlands habitat. Bonnie has also implemented a highly effective workamper program. In return for being allowed to park their recreational vehicle on a refuge, workampers provide hours of work to the refuge. Bonnie helps match skills and interests with work that needs doing, resulting in a rewarding experience for the workampers and valuable support for the refuge.
