  • The Delmarva Peninsula fox squirrel is the largest tree squirrel in the western hemisphere and can weigh up to 3 pounds.
  • Delmarva fox squirrels have shorter, rounder ears and thicker necks than gray squirrels.
  • The Delmarva fox squirrel has light colored feet and toes, causing some to say that a running Delmarva squirrel looks like it's wearing white slippers.
  • Young are born blind and hairless. Their eyes open after about 5 weeks; they are weaned at about 8 or 9 weeks, and are then on their own.
  • In the wild, Delmarva fox squirrels live to be up to 6 years old.
  • Although a forest species, the Delmarva fox squirrel spends most of its time on the ground foraging for food in woodlots and nearby fields.
