  • The Kodiak brown bear is the largest bear in the world. Males can grow to be up to 10 feet tall and weigh 1500 pounds.
  • Bears return to the same fishing spot each summer for the salmon run.
  • Bears almost always dig their dens on north-facing slopes and seek hillsides with deep snow cover.
  • Newborn cubs weigh about a pound. Their eyes open when they are about 6 weeks old.
  • Kodiak brown bears have a distinctive shoulder hump, caused by muscles used for digging.
  • The average lifespan is 20 years for a Kodiak brown bear; the oldest recorded Kodiak brown bear was a 35-year-old female.
