Title: Woman in plumed hat

Caption: The rise of the bird-preservation movement at the end of the 19th century was in response to the slaughter of birds to adorn womenÕs hats and clothing. That effort also gave birth to the first National Wildlife Refuge, Pelican Island, Florida, in 1903, created by President Theodore Roosevelt.
