Title: Queen

Location: Merritt Island NWR, Titusville, FL

Caption: This species, Queen (Danaus gilippus), is a common butterfly in the southern and southwestern U.S. It occurs at many refuges, including Merritt Island NWR, Florida, where this photo was taken. As with other "milkweed butterflies," males of this species will seek out particular flowers (e.g. ageratum, eupatorium, and heliotrope) to get certain alkaloids needed for breeding. Queens may gather in groups overnight. The role of butterflies and plants is a fine introduction to environmental interpretation. Butterfly-watching, moreover, is a growing subset of wildlife watching and wildlife photography, an activity popular at many refuges.
