Title:
Great Egret
Location:
Merritt Island NWR, FL
Caption:
Great Egret (Ardea alba) was one long-legged
heron species devastated at the end of the 19th
century, slaughtered for its decorative plumes. Refuges,
in great part, were established to protect these very
birds. Today, they abound on many refuges, including
at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Florida,
where this photograph was taken.
