Title: Balcones Canyonlands NWR observation deck

Location: Texas Caption: Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge was established in February, 1992. This 41,000-acre oasis of juniper-oak habitat in the hill country northwest of Austin, Texas, was established to protect the endangered Black-capped Vireo (Vireo atricapillus) and the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler (Dendroica chrysoparia). The boardwalk and observation deck allow the visitor easy access and a shaded platform for watching and photographing wildlife. The observation deck is open almost year- around (excluding a few weekends in the fall), a center for wildlife watching and environmental interpretation. However, the refuge staff is obligated to minimize the disturbance to the surrounding nesting vireos. This is accomplished by closing the deck for a short period just as the vireos arrive in spring.
