Title:
American Avocet
Location:
Bear River NWR, UT
Caption:
This American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana), a male,
is characteristic of shorebird life at Bear River National
Wildlife Refuge, in Utah. The species will nest at shallow
inland lakes and ponds - often saline lakes - in the
West. (The species also occurs in winter at a number
of coastal refuges from the Carolinas southward in the
East and in California in the West.) This photo was
taken in late August at Great Salt Lake, a season when
hundreds of thousands of American Avocets occur. Wildlife
watchers are treated to this phenomenon annually.
